Cape Cod Photography - Kate Murphy Lowenstein Photography

Welcome to my blog! I am a family portrait and wedding photographer based on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. My style is casual and classy; modern and classic; creative and fun! My passion is capturing natural and genuine expressions of the people I photograph using natural light and creating "real life images".

My enthusiasm for photography began nine years ago when I borrowed my friend's SLR (film) camera for my honeymoon. It was then I discovered I had a talent for photography. I took classes and seminars, read books and immersed myself in photography and dreamed that someday I would be a photographer.

Forward nine years and I am a wife, mother of three, and a photographer. I wear flip flops or Uggs and jeans almost every day. I love to dress up on special occasions. I love the beach. I love meeting new people and spending time getting to know them. I love to capture who a person is, their genuine smiles, their interaction with the people they love. I think a person's eyes tell a lot about who they are, and I love getting so close to their eyes that I cut off their head in the photograph.

Rather than rambling on about myself, below is a glimpse into both my personal and professional life featuring images from my photo shoots as well as my family and friends. All in all, I hope my blog gives you a sense of who I am and what I'm all about...

Check back frequently for what's happening and studio specials.

Thanks for visiting!

Big family!

Again, rescheduled due to bad weather (this time wind and not rain), I was finally able to meet up with the Affanato family at New Silver beach last Friday evening. It was a nice evening - overcast, gray and a little foggy, but the light was great and I didn't have to worry about shadows and everyone squinting. There was little wind, but that meant the sand gnats were out to get us! Luckily, I always bring bug spray!

Here's the whole gang...all 22 of them!

And all "the kids".

And their families.

The girls (minus the littlest) were having fun!

The boys maybe not so much interested in having their picture taken, but a good one of them nonetheless.

And one more of the girls hammin' it up for the camera!

Thank you all for a great photo session!

Bijesse Family

Last week I traveled down to Brewster to photograph this family that you might recognize from my website. I photographed them last year on the same beach and it was great to see how the kids have grown! Last year one of my favorite images was one I shot at their session as Charlie and his dad ran down the beach. It is in the family gallery on my website as well as hanging on the wall at The Daily Brew in Cataumet (which has delicious sandwiches BTW if you're in the area!).

Here are this years favorites...

And my favorite favorite from their session...The kids had a race down the beach which Charlie won and Juliet needed a little help over the finish line.

It was great to see you again this year! I hope to see you again next year!

Rebecca & Brian/Engagement

A couple weeks ago (ugh! was it really that long ago!) I shot Rebecca and Brian's engagement session. After rescheduling a few times due to the horrendous June weather and once because Brain blew out his back, we were finally able to meet up! It was an extremely windy evening on Old Silver Beach, but the light was spectacular and the couple (despite a rip-roaring weekend in NY) were troopers!

Here are a few favs...

Meet Rebecca & Brian.

We hid from the wind in the cove across the street for a bit.

Rebecca and Brian will marry on 9-12-2009. Ahaha - Photoshop "magic".

Then we decided to brave the wind on the beach. Check out those white caps!

I love this shot. Serene and beautiful. Just the two of them against the backdrop of a beautiful dusk sky. You picked the perfect colors, Rebecca & Brian!

And at the end of our session, not so serious stuff!

Thanks, R&B for a great session. Can't wait for your 9-12-2009 wedding at the Falmouth Yacht Club!

A little behind on blogging!

I've always wanted to visit and dreamed some day of photographing a wedding on the property, so I was thrilled when Dawn Lea called me to photograph her family at the Quissett Harbor House. They rent here every summer for a month. The house was once a hotel and is now rented to Cape Cod visitors like the Chalmers.

It's a perfect spot - beautiful views of Quissett Harbor on one side and views of The Knob on the other. Shamefully in my 11 years as a Cape Cod resident and many years as a summer transplant, I have only been to The Knob twice. The last time I dared hike there with my three kids, two of which wanted to be held on the way back along with the camera equipment I'd brought with me - ughh!

But this time, I was happy to go alone and enjoy some time with the Chalmers family and my camera.

Here's the family and their dog, Lizzie, with a view of the Quissett Harbor House in the backdrop.

This was one of my favorites from their session. Lizzie taking the family for a walk.

I love pictures like this!

High School Sweethearts

Seven Eleven - an easy anniversary to remember. It couldn't have been a more perfect day for Emily and Matt's wedding. Blue skies. A light breeze. Just enough to keep things cool on Bourne Farm.

High school sweethearts, Emily and Matt made their promise 'til death do they part at Bourne Farm on Saturday. Emily works for Party Cape Cod and had obviously spent a lot of time getting the details just right for her wedding day with the help of wedding coordinator, Connie Clark of The Perfect Plan.

I was so busy last summer at the time of Emily and Matt's engagement session that they never made the blog. So here I make up for that by posting quite a few from their wedding day!

Emily's stunning pinkalicious bouquet wrapped with her grandmother's hanky thanks to Courtney's Floral Creations.

Emily awaiting the phone call giving her the go-ahead to come on down to the ceremony site. Above her head it reads,"Happiness. Not in another place, but this place...Not for another hour, but this hour." I thought it fitting.

Emily drove down to Bourne Farm with her Dad in an antique Ford.

The ceremony was a tear-jerker! As Emily says her vows, a tear rolls down her cheek.

Her Mom and Dad look on, holding hands with their grandson in their lap. (And I am hiding my tears behind my camera).

Some post-ceremony bubbles!

And then a trip to Black Beach for some wedding party shots.

A super spectacular tent. I love how they used square tables for something a little different and custom linens to go along with their pink theme.

For the very first time, the new Mr. And Mrs. Fronius! I love the look of shear joy on Emily's face.

And back out for some more photos of the bride and groom. The wheatgrass is new this year at Bourne Farm - LOVE IT! Can't wait to photograph my own kids there in the fall (even though they are my worst subjects)!

As I've mentioned before, Bourne Farm is one of my favorite locations as there are just so so many great spots for pictures. I had a lot of favorites of Emily and Matt on the property, but this one was the ultimate.

And signing off with a fitting image. Thank you Emily and Matt for a great day. I had a great time laughing with you, crying with you, and having fun with you on your wedding day!

Pinkalicious!

The doctor said, "Tell her what it is, Dad!" and there was silence. I didn't know what to think. "Dad?" And still another moment. I was so relieved it was out after a miserable 9 months, but the silence made me think something was wrong. Then he uttered, "It's a girl!"

I never thought I'd have a little girl. I loved my boys and really pictured myself with three of them. Plus a doctor in the family had said that history and genetics suggested that we had less than a 10% chance of having a girl. Andrew was one of two boys, his father one of two boys, his grandfather - two boys, cousins - two boys, etc., etc. Or maybe I had just convinced myself it would be another boy so I wasn't disappointed when I gave birth to another.

Having a girl has definitely changed our household. I don't think we owned one pink thing before her arrival. We definitely didn't have dolls or princess outfits or princess parties!

On Saturday, my baby girl turned 3. I was shooting a wedding (more on that later!), so we celebrated with a Princess Party on Sunday. The half dozen little girls that came made princess crowns, adorned the homemade princess skirts I made them, got their fingers and toes painted, their makeup applied, and bounced in the bounce castle. It was a fun day!

Here is Lainey awaiting her guests.

And doing a little song and dance in her tutu.

A few highlights of the day...

Friends.

Bouncing.

And the girls (minus Molly) before they had a whack at the pinata.

Family at Chappy

Thankfully this family was able to be a little flexible with their scheduling, as once again, the clouds were abound and rain was forecasted for the evening. By the time we got to the beach at 5pm, it was still overcast, but quite nice! This family was a lot of fun to photograph and I took WAY too many pictures!

Here are just a few I loved.

Here are C. and his uncle greeting cars at the beach. I thought this was just so cute!

And my friend racing ahead of the family toward me! Too cute!

Thanks again for being so flexible on yet another unpredictable June day!

4 kids on the beach

You'd think that photographing a family with 4 young kids would be a huge challenge. But I have to say, the families that I've photographed with 4 kids (plus) have the most well-behaved children! Maybe that's why they just kept on having them... Or maybe the parents are so relaxed that the kids are in turn relaxed... I'm not sure what the case is, but I was happy to photograph these four well-behaved kids last Wednesday evening. In spite of the gray day and forecast for rain, I was happy that this Mom wanted to go ahead with our session as planned. The no-see-ums were out in full force, but other than that, it was a perfect evening for pictures!

I have so many pictures from this session that I just LOVED, but I'm short on time, so here are just a few...

The oldest.

Next.

2nd to last.

The youngest.

I love how the youngest is looking to see what the others are doing in this one!

Hillary & Jamie wed

I met HIllary and Jamie for the first time on Thursday night at their wedding rehearsal. They were just as I imagined they would be from my phone conversations with Hillary and the picture she had sent me before she hired me for her wedding. Hillary met me with a giant hug and said, "I feel like I know you!" It was such a warm and friendly greeting and such a compliment from this woman who lives in Texas almost 2000 miles away (she must be a blog reader!). Jamie was equally as handsome as Hillary was gorgeous and the two of them together were just plain adorable!

Their wedding took place the following day at the Nauticus Marina in Osterville. The weather was a manic array of clouds, chill, wind, light rain, sun, heat, humidity, blue skies, thunder and lightening, and pouring rain. It was a true New England temperamental spring day for all of their Texas guests to take in! Luckily none of the weather could overshadow the love and joy and celebration that took place last Friday.

Without further ado, the wedding of Hillary & Jamie...

These two look better than the JCrew models!

I love the color of the bridesmaids dresses and the contrast of the flowers. I've said it before...I love when the flowers stand out against the dresses rather than match them - it really make the flowers POP!

Ahhh! The sun!

They couldn't stop cracking up through their first dance. So cute!

They let me get some more pictures of the two of them after dinner.

I knew when I saw this telephone booth I just had to get some pictures of them in it!

Then Hillary's father took me up to the roof deck of the restaurant next door for some ariel shots. Off in the distance we could hear the thunder and see the lightening heading our way.

Thank you to Hillary and Jamie and their families for another fabulous wedding! Love you guys!
