Cape Cod Photography - Kate Murphy Lowenstein Photography

Welcome to my blog! I am a family portrait and wedding photographer based on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. My style is casual and classy; modern and classic; creative and fun! My passion is capturing natural and genuine expressions of the people I photograph using natural light and creating "real life images".

My enthusiasm for photography began nine years ago when I borrowed my friend's SLR (film) camera for my honeymoon. It was then I discovered I had a talent for photography. I took classes and seminars, read books and immersed myself in photography and dreamed that someday I would be a photographer.

Forward nine years and I am a wife, mother of three, and a photographer. I wear flip flops or Uggs and jeans almost every day. I love to dress up on special occasions. I love the beach. I love meeting new people and spending time getting to know them. I love to capture who a person is, their genuine smiles, their interaction with the people they love. I think a person's eyes tell a lot about who they are, and I love getting so close to their eyes that I cut off their head in the photograph.

Rather than rambling on about myself, below is a glimpse into both my personal and professional life featuring images from my photo shoots as well as my family and friends. All in all, I hope my blog gives you a sense of who I am and what I'm all about...

Check back frequently for what's happening and studio specials.

Thanks for visiting!

Chrissy & Matt

Last weekend I was thrilled when the meteorologists were once again mistaken and it turned out to be a gorgeous wedding day for Chrissy & Matt.

Here again are some fabulous bridal shoes. I think I am obsessed a little with the shoes. If I ever had an occasion to wear fabulous shoes other than my flip flops, Uggs, or Hunters, I would!

Here's Chrissy getting ready with lots of helping hands.

Because Chrissy and Matt wanted to spend time with their guests during their cocktail hour, they opted to see each other for the first time before the ceremony (a fabulous idea in my opinion!) This gave us plenty of time for pictures and a nice relaxing day for the bride and groom. Here they see each other for the first time. Matt's checking his Crackberry one last time (just kidding! I think he was just turning it off!).

After the first glance there were a few moments alone, family formals and then pictures on the beach with the wedding party. Here are Chrissy and the girls.

And Matt and his groomsmen.

And the whole gang. This pose was their idea. Since we had plenty of time, I asked them all what pose they wanted to do and when the guy on the end jumped, they all jumped too. It was tough getting them all to go at the same time, but I thought this one was really cute. Looks like Matt wins for highest jump!

My friend and assistant for the day, Elizabeth (click here for more info on Elizabeth Horne Photography), shot this one and I thought it was just too cute not to post. I hope I can return the favor of some awesome shots when I assist her with her wedding tomorrow!

Yay! We're married!

Outside the church after the ceremony a road race was passing by. Lots of the runners were clapping for the bride and groom and here are Chrissy and Matt looking on.

It's not often I post detail shots of a wedding on the blog. I guess I chose this one because the cake was so pretty and because I loved the lines of the tent.

And speaking of the tent. Here it is all lit up at night. It was a gorgeous tent and this image just happened by chance (sometimes I get lucky!). As I was outside photographing the tent on my tripod, Elizabeth was inside photographing the guests on the dance floor. When her flash fired, it lit up the whole tent including the flags. Pretty cool, huh?

There was a tremendous amount of dancing at this wedding thanks to their guests that like to PARTAY and their band, The Pulse of Boston.

And the night ended with a sparkler sendoff for the bride and groom...

and an impromptu a capella sing-along to "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" into umbrellas and wasted sparklers. Maybe not the most appropriate song for a wedding, guys, but very fun!

Thanks Chrissy and Matt for a really fun wedding!

Happy Baby!

On Monday I had the pleasure of meeting baby C. and his Mom and Dad. He was the happiest baby I have ever photographed! (Yes, even happier than my Lainey). He was just the cutest thing ever!

Just look at that face!

What more can I say about this cutie-patootie? He's so cute I want to eat him up!

Thanks for a great baby session, C!

1st family on the beach!

OK, I apologize. I've been so wrapped up in weddings and editing and albums, etc. that I nearly forgot to blog about the family I photographed on the beach a few weeks ago!

I got a call early this spring to schedule the session as it wasn't often that this family is able to get together with their busy schedules and being so far away from each other. Thankfully my client's daughter and her son were visiting the Cape with their families on the same day - and there was only one day of overlap. Thank God for the decent weather that one day!

Here is their lovely family.

These were just a few of my favorites from their session...

It was clear that these children had been photographed by a pro photographer before (either that or they've been watching a lot of Top Model)! This one was especially fond of the camera and boy could she work it! So cute!

This one cracks me up! The kids were all screaming out which flavor of ice cream they were going to get when we were finished. It makes me laugh.

Thank you T. Family for a great beach session!

Kara & Mike tie the knot!

In spite of the downer weather forecast, Saturday turned out to be spectacular! On Saturday, I witnessed Kara and Mike exchange their vows at Our Lady of Victory and also learned a few fun facts about the couple. Kara ran 5 marathons each in a different state. Mike was a competitive lumberjack in college. Mike competes in triathlons. Kara's grandfather grew up on the Barn Land - the beautiful property with views of Barnstable Harbor where their reception was held.
Welcome to the marriage of Kara and Mike.

Before they exchanged their vows, I met Kara and her bridesmaids at Kara's parents house. Here are Kara's niece and Mike's niece (now Kara and Mike's nieces). They were so cute!

And their pink Converse shoes were awesome.

I also have to say that I really loved Kara's bridesmaids dresses. They just looked so good (and comfortable) on all of her bridesmaids. I loved the color and how she chose flowers to compliment and not match it. Nice going, Kara!

Here's a closer look at Kara's bouquet.

And a couple more of Kara and her bridesmaids.

I love this one. Kara is just really full of life and loves to have fun!

For transportation Kara had hired a school bus to take the girls to the church. It was a lot bumpier ride than we all remembered as kids!

We're married!

Having fun on the bus.

And to a secluded beach area for photos. Here are Mike and his groomsmen who were also sporting their Converse.

Ooooh! I just love this shot!

And a fun one with the wedding party.

And I ducked into the poison ivy for this one (that's what that is in the lower right hand corner). They were a little more afraid than I was and luckily I don't have poison ivy (yet).

Bean was so happy to see them for a quick visit.

And they were happy to see Bean.

I just loved their first dance. They had these big huge grins the entire time! And most brides and grooms cut the dance short and invite others on the dance floor or just cut the song. But these two kept going and going and going - the whole time with ear to ear smiles.

After dancing, there were a few toasts. The first one from Kara's brother to thank their dad for all his hard work in getting the Barn Land ready for the wedding. I had stopped by a couple days before the wedding to get the lay of the land and was met by Kara's Mom and her Dad and their neighbor who were putting on the last touches. Kara's Mom gave me the tour. The 14 acre property is just so beautiful and serene with so many nooks and crannies for pictures! Kara's Dad had been working for 18 months to get the property ready for her wedding - restoring rock walls, building a stone bridge, moving massive boulders, building a road... It was very impressive! And the rock walls he restored were built with his own two hands without the use of mortar. They are reminiscent of the time his own father lived here.
Here's Kara's Dad.

I loved this shot because you can see all of the hard work in his hands against Kara's dress and her ivory skin.

And I couldn't leave out a picture of the rock wall (and this is only a small portion of it)!

Thanks Kara and Mike! I hope you are enjoying Jamaica, getting your hair braided, having some fruity cocktails and getting some sun (bring some back for us)!

A perfect pair. A perfect day.

I will start off this post by apologizing. I'm sorry for such a long post. I just LOVE LOVE LOVED every image I shot at Holly and Isaac's wedding this past Sunday and I can't decide on what to post - so I am posting LOTS!

I first met Holly last summer when she came to interview me for her wedding. I knew the minute she stepped out of her car with her stylish little sundress and wonderful smile that I wanted so badly to be her photographer. My good feelings that day about her were confirmed when I photographed her and her fiance Isaac on a warm, but drizzly day in November. I just loved them both instantly!

It was such a pleasure to see them tie the knot on Sunday and an honor to be there as their photographer. Thankfully, the sun came out for the first time this month and it was the perfect day for a wedding at the gorgeous Wequassett Inn in Chatham.

I posted Holly's wedding gown below in my previous post along with her equally to-die-for Manolo Blahniks. Here she is checking herself out in her wedding attire. I think she likes it!

Here she is all dressed and ready to go. I just love the lines of her body and the natural light in this shot.

Holly has such a pretty smile and beautiful eyes.

A little closer so you can see her eyes.

And again, the shoes with her beautiful bouquet.

And Holly still had that big grin as I was on the ground photographing her shoes.

Here are Holly's bridesmaids workin' the camera. (I have to say, a gorgeous group of girls.)

As we walked down to the pool where the wedding ceremony was to take place, we ran into this woman with her beach ball. Her outfit screams "tourist" and she playfully tossed her beach ball to Holly. Catch!

And here he is, the handsome groom joking around with his guys before the ceremony.

Oh so equally gorgeous.

It was a really nice ceremony performed by a long-time friend of the groom and his family. In spite of the blowing wind, Holly and Isaac were miraculously able to light the candles symbolizing their union (frankly, I didn't think it could be done). Here they are just after the ceremony with their guests. Not a bad spot for a wedding, huh?

And because typically the focus is on the girls, I'm mixing it up this time! Check out the handsome groomsmen!

After some family and wedding party pictures, we headed down to the beach. Look at how gorgeous they are! A magazine shot for sure!

This is the last shoe shot, I promise.

A classic.

Another for a magazine. I love the texture of the rocks and the serene look on their faces.

The jury is still out on this one. I was trying something new - an vintage Kodak duaflex camera. It sat in my husband's grandmother's basement for many, many years. Years in which it accumulated dust and mold. My sister-in-law who is very into vintage, taught me how to use it. I clearly haven't mastered the process or the camera is just too dang old, but here's the look. What do you think?

Eeek! Run Holly, run!

They are just so freakin' cute - I love them!

A little lounging before heading back to the reception.

And another from the vintage camera.

After dinner, the Swinging Johnsons rocked! And did the horah.

I could go on and on and on....but I digress. I must get back to some other things that need my attention before my next big wedding...tomorrow!

Thank you Holly and Isaac. I had a blast at your wedding. Have a great honeymoon and I will be in touch soon!

Please VOTE!

Hello blog readers! Apparently I have been nominated as Best Photographer on the Cape Cod A List. I was on the list last year as well, however I didn't promote the fact and therefore didn't receive any votes. So, this year, I don't want to look like a complete loser and so I am asking for your vote!

If you would, please take a moment to register & vote for me at http://capecodalist.cityvoter.com/kml-photography/biz/87890. Thanks! - I'd appreciate it!

Because I was feeling a little low about the fact I didn't get any votes last year (and because of this darn rain!), I checked out my feedback on my Pictage site and I am pleased to see the following results:

Kate was amazing at managing our wedding - a very casual beach wedding with a variety of friends and family. The photos came out beautifully - she captured the day perfectly!

We would HIGHLY recommend KML Photography. From the day we met Kate through the wedding day, she was fantastic. She was very responsive and never seemed to mind answering our (endless) questions. We were a little nervous about the engagement shoot but she is so easy to be around - it ended up being really fun! Our wedding pictures came out better than we could have ever hoped for. It is going to be hard to choose just a few. Another great thing about Kate - on the actual wedding day when we were anxious to join our guests and the fun - she did a great job of getting great pictures without taking up huge amounts of time. We really appreciated it. KML definitely gets our highest recommendation.

Kate was so wonderful! She was easy to work with, and we hardly noticed her or her assistant during the wedding. She took amazing pictures and we were lucky to have her as our photographer, she was awesome. I would highly recommend her and I am happy to talk with anyone about our experience. Kate, thank you so much!! You captured our wedding memories so we can always look back and relive the best day of our lives! Lisa Rolince

Kate was great at capturing our wedding and she exceeded our expectations. If you're considering hiring her, just hire her and don't worry about your photos. I also recommend doing an engagement session photo shoot with her so you can get comfortable in front of the camera.

I recently received the following note from Sarah and Jamie - my first wedding of 2009.
"Dear Kate, We can't thank you enough for the absolutely phenomenal job you and your assistant did taking pictures for our wedding. We could not have been more pleased and we can't wait to see the album. We've received so many compliments and the results truly exceeded our expectations. Thanks again! Best wishes, Sarah & Jamie"

It is so great to hear such wonderful feedback! Although this job is much more challenging than I anticipated when I started my business 4 years ago, I truly love it and feedback like the above confirms that the people entrusting me to capture their greatest moments love it too. It's a warm and fuzzy feeling on yet another cold and rainy day.

Thanks again for taking the time to vote! (click here!)

And because a post isn't the same without a picture, here's just a sneak at one from Holly and Isaac's wedding on Sunday at the beautiful Wequassett Inn. More later...

Two weddings and a family...

Teresa and Derek's wedding Friday night was the first of three big events for me over the weekend. It may have been rained on, but it certainly didn't dampen the mood of love and fun!
They tied the knot at St. Anthony's in East Falmouth, followed by their reception at the Flying Bridge in Falmouth.

Here are a few of my favorites from the day...

Look at these cutie-patooties!

I'm pretty sure the wedding guests thought something was up when I saw Teresa's MOH (Maid of Honor) lift her dress over her shoes and I went flying down the aisle so I wouldn't miss this next shot.

Following the ceremony, Teresa visited the cemetery behind the church to put a rose on each of her grandparent's gravestones.

Derek has a killer dimple!

And Teresa was just glowing and beautiful on her wedding day.

And here's my homage to Grant Wood (you know, the painting of the farmer and his wife titled "American Gothic"?.

And later DJ Danny Walsh got the dance floor rockin'!

Thanks Teresa and Derek for a great wedding! I hope your having this much fun on your cruise!

4 Pounder!

This morning I met baby C. in the studio with her parents and big sister, A. She is two weeks old and cute as a button! She currently weighs 5 pounds now that she's gained a little weight. She is the tiniest, cutest little baby! I had small babies, but I can't even remember them being this little (so sad). Luckily, I have pictures to jog my memory. I'm happy they brought her in so early so that they will have some images to jog their memory too!

My sister-in-law collects and sells vintage items on etsy (search on "paperdollsforboys" in the seller section). Her shop is currently closed as they get ready for a big move, but here's one of the things I swiped (OK borrowed) from her on my last visit - a cool, old scale. I have been so anxious to use it and finally my opportunity! I hope I did you proud, Tracey!

Here's C. and her 11-month-old sister, A. Irish twins!

And big sister, all alone (plus a new backdrop I was trying out).

That's Dad's ring draped over her toe. It surely would have fit on her ankle if only we could've gotten it over her foot!

So tiny and cute!

She's awake!

And one last one of big sister!

Thanks again for bringing them in. They were both so well-behaved and sweet!

Sunday in Cataumet

Yesterday I met with Julianne and Fritz who were in town for a quick visit with family, a fun party and their engagement shoot.
I met them down at the Cataumet Post Office - a place that I go every few days to collect my mail and a location I have always wanted to photograph. Finally, a Cataumet bride willing!

Meet the happy couple. Julianne grew up on Scraggy Neck which is just down the road. Fritz grew up in Germany and moved to the US just four years ago.

Julianne has really pretty eyes and a great smile. She actually got a bit teary after this shot and admittedly I was sucking back tears too. (Oh the wedding will be a tear jerker for sure!)

I wanted to photograph at the Post Office because of the cool brick building across the way which was once a train station. Of course, in the back are the train tracks...

and the playground where Julianne played as a child.

And it wouldn't have been a Cape Cod photo session without the beach! We headed down to Old Silver Beach just before the rain came.

I loved this shot - the seagull flying off, Cleveland's Ledge Lighthouse off in the fog, and the two of them sharing a genuine moment.

Thanks for a fun engagement session! See you in 8 weeks for your Scraggy Neck nuptials!
