Cape Cod Photography - Kate Murphy Lowenstein Photography

Welcome to my blog! I am a family portrait and wedding photographer based on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. My style is casual and classy; modern and classic; creative and fun! My passion is capturing natural and genuine expressions of the people I photograph using natural light and creating "real life images".

My enthusiasm for photography began nine years ago when I borrowed my friend's SLR (film) camera for my honeymoon. It was then I discovered I had a talent for photography. I took classes and seminars, read books and immersed myself in photography and dreamed that someday I would be a photographer.

Forward nine years and I am a wife, mother of three, and a photographer. I wear flip flops or Uggs and jeans almost every day. I love to dress up on special occasions. I love the beach. I love meeting new people and spending time getting to know them. I love to capture who a person is, their genuine smiles, their interaction with the people they love. I think a person's eyes tell a lot about who they are, and I love getting so close to their eyes that I cut off their head in the photograph.

Rather than rambling on about myself, below is a glimpse into both my personal and professional life featuring images from my photo shoots as well as my family and friends. All in all, I hope my blog gives you a sense of who I am and what I'm all about...

Check back frequently for what's happening and studio specials.

Thanks for visiting!

1st ones in!

The weather was soooo nice this weekend and on Sunday when the temperature felt about 80-something degrees, my kids were begging me to go to the beach. I couldn't resist. So, here they are at the beach in front of my parent's house enjoying the great weather and testing the water. The water was so cold that I couldn't even put my big toe in without it hurting. But Quinn is so anxious for summer and swimming that he went full on in - more than once! Brrrrrr!!!

If you're my Facebook friend, you'll see even more images from the day. I hope this great weather sticks - I'm loving it!

Here's the first test - the head.

Monkey see, monkey do. Ahhhh!

And he's in! And out in a jiffy! C-c-c-COLD!

My kids were playing outside today with the nanny when I decided to snap a few pictures of them. I called each one into the studio for a quick couple of shots. They were placed in this rocking chair only because it happened to be there in transition from the house to storage. I used only the light coming from the outside and took about 5 shots of each of them.

Here's Lainey. Check out her wild hair! If I try to tame it with a barrette or pigtails, they are out within 2 minutes and the hair is then even more wild! It's kind of cute all curly and wild though!

Lainey is my "happy girl." I never seem to have a problem getting her to smile for the camera. All I have to do is laugh and she laughs too. This is the face that completely reminds me of Lainey.

And this face too.

Then it was Jack's turn. He made all sorts of silly faces before he just started cracking up.

And lastly, Quinn. He's the wise-guy pretending to pick his nose for the camera. You'd think he'd be a little more photogenic and immune to the camera at this point with a mother as a photographer, but this kid is the worst in front of the camera! He won't look at it, won't sit still, makes silly faces... just IMPOSSIBLE! Perhaps because it's ME behind the camera.

And another one of Lainey as she twirled around with her lollipop outside. She completely cracks me up with this outfit! First of all, every morning she wakes up (in my bed) and turns to me and says, "I need to get dressed." She picks out her own clothes, puts them on and changes at least another 3-5 times throughout the day. She usually opts to wear a dress - her princess dress is the dress of choice. If the princess dress is in the wash, anything pink will do. Then she picks out the shoes. These patent leathers have been the shoe of choice lately - even if she's wearing jeans or sweats. Pretty much every day she asks to paint her nails too - pink, of course! She is all girl!

Senior Session

Last monday I photographed this beautiful senior who was visiting from Indiana. It was a crazy windy day and a bit chilly, but we were lucky to get the photo session in before the rain came down!

A quick post today as I am dealing with some computer issues and the current computer I am working on is very slow as I am downloading a bunch of data. Hope everyone had a Happy Easter and Passover!

1st wedding of '09!

I haven't finished editing yet, but I couldn't resist posting some images from the wedding on Saturday. I took a million photos of Sarah and her awesome hat. And check out the feathered flowers!

I added an antique wash to this glamorous shot of her to give it an old feeling.

This is one of my favorites from the day.

Here are Sarah's girls.

And Sarah's handsome groom, Jamie.

I think this one is hilarious. Jamie can't get the ring on her finger and Sarah is cracking up. Pretty much everyone else on the alter is too. Check out the alter boys expression. But what makes this really funny is the look on the priest's face!

If you're a blog stalker, you know I always love one of the bride and groom just after the ceremony as they walk down the aisle - and Sarah's expression in this one makes it!

Even though it felt like gale force winds and it was probably about 40-something degrees out, the bride and groom (and wedding party) braved the beach. I think it was a good call!

Jamie and Sarah are HUGE Red Sox fans, so it was fitting that they got engaged at a Red Sox game and had Red Sox tickets as place cards!

Another of my favorites of the day. I love real moments between couples!

Well, this is as far as I've edited at this point. I hope to get through the rest of the images by next week and will try to post a few more from the reception.

A huge "thanks!" to Sarah and Jamie and their families for a fabulous wedding! And thank you to Alison Liset from Elegant Engagements (click here for more info) who did an awesome job coordinating the wedding and making it such a fabulous event!

Lainey in the news

Well, Lainey wasn't REALLY in the news. But her picture did make last week's Caline for Kids Ad in the Falmouth Enterprise. Check it out!

I had a busy week - my first wedding of the season on Saturday and a senior photo session this morning before the rain.

I can't wait to blog some of the images I shot on Saturday! It was a great wedding and lots of fun! The bride and groom were fantastic. We even braved the weather and headed to the beach for some cold and windy pictures - but thanks to the wedding party and especially to Sarah and Jamie for sticking it out! I've been editing all day and am only about 1/4 of the way through the process. I hope to have them posted before the end of the week!

Keep checking!

On Monday, Tuesday and Thursday of this week I spent some time in Hyannis at NEIPP (The New England School of Professional Photography). It was my first time at NEIPP. Although I've always wanted to attend, it was always a full week & overnight program until this year. I was so happy they added day classes to this year's line-up and I attended some really great ones and learned a lot! I can't wait to practice all I learned at my first wedding of the season tomorrow!

Here are some images from yesterday's classes with Don Chick and Steve Bedell.

Here's Don Chick teaching studio lighting and making the model laugh.

The next model was a bit more serious - and a really good sport!

After Don's class and lunch, we headed outside for some natural lighting with Steve Bedell. This little boy was one of the student's kids. How cute!

We had some great models for our outdoor session.

Here's Steve. "See the light!"
