Cape Cod Photography - Kate Murphy Lowenstein Photography

Welcome to my blog! I am a family portrait and wedding photographer based on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. My style is casual and classy; modern and classic; creative and fun! My passion is capturing natural and genuine expressions of the people I photograph using natural light and creating "real life images".

My enthusiasm for photography began nine years ago when I borrowed my friend's SLR (film) camera for my honeymoon. It was then I discovered I had a talent for photography. I took classes and seminars, read books and immersed myself in photography and dreamed that someday I would be a photographer.

Forward nine years and I am a wife, mother of three, and a photographer. I wear flip flops or Uggs and jeans almost every day. I love to dress up on special occasions. I love the beach. I love meeting new people and spending time getting to know them. I love to capture who a person is, their genuine smiles, their interaction with the people they love. I think a person's eyes tell a lot about who they are, and I love getting so close to their eyes that I cut off their head in the photograph.

Rather than rambling on about myself, below is a glimpse into both my personal and professional life featuring images from my photo shoots as well as my family and friends. All in all, I hope my blog gives you a sense of who I am and what I'm all about...

Check back frequently for what's happening and studio specials.

Thanks for visiting!

Shopping for Lainey

Yesterday I hit Main Street Falmouth and stopped into Caline for Kids (click here for more info). They had a great sale and I picked up a few outfits for Lainey. I couldn't resist taking some pictures of her in a couple of her new outfits.

As I was getting my camera ready, I look over and there's Lainey with her glasses on and being cute. I wish she didn't have the sippy cup with her, but I thought this one was too cute not to post.

I just loved the colors in this cute Baby Lulu dress!

And this one is a little big, but it'll be great next fall. Again, the colors are great and it's just too cute!

Caline for Kids also has a gorgeous new spring/summer collection in the store. And if you're looking for a white sundress for your family beach portrait, they have some really cute ones. I have my eye on a fuschia and lime green sundress for Lainey. I just love the new bright colors out this spring!

Wednesday in the studio

On Wednesday, I photographed another newborn baby. This one was a mere 2 weeks old and came with his two older brothers (there must be something in the Cape water - see the other newborn post below with 3 boys!). I recommend that newborn sessions are done when the baby is 2 weeks or younger because typically at this stage the babies are still sleepy. Not in this case! This baby would not sleep no matter what we did! But isn't he so cute?! He almost looks as if he's giving me a smile in this one.

Still awake...

And pictured here with his handsome older brothers.

How cute are they!

The oldest. So handsome!

The middle. Look at those eyes and those lips!

And a couple of shots of the boys that I took this fall over at Bourne Farm and never posted...

Thanks for bringing in your beautiful baby boys, R.!

Sunday in Cataumet/W.Falmouth

The weather was so beautiful yesterday and I was so happy to see some old friends who came to the studio for a photo shoot. I got some fantastic shots, but I can't share yet as they are a Mother's Day surprise!

I wouldn't want to post without some pictures, so here's a few from our ski vacation last week at Burke Mountain in VT. The kids all skied and had a great time!
Quinn and Lainey ready for a day on the slopes.

Go, Lainey! Go! Unfortunately I didn't get a picture of the front of her as she was going down with a huge smile on her face. That's because I was the one sending her down the bunny slope and I had a hard time catching up with her!

Skiing is tough! Or maybe she was just enjoying the sunshine on her face.

Here's Jack going up the J bar all by himself. Unfortunately this is the only picture of Jack I have. I was on the bunny slope with Lainey and couldn't get much of a shot with only my 50mm lens on hand.

Here are Andrew and Quinn going up on the lift.

And Quinn speeding down the mountain. Andrew tried to encourage him to do some turning and work on his form, but Quinn told him, "there are two things about me you cannot change...One, I like to go fast. And two, I like Science." Oh, that is one to be written down! Quinn pointed down the mountain and when over every bump he could find. There were a few falls, but he got right back up and did it again. Way to go, Quinn!

The week before vacation

Right before going away with my family, I was psyched to go visit my friend, Roberta. She had just had another baby boy to add to her other brood of boys. I have photographed the older two on a number of occasions and I love seeing how much they've grown and matured each time. L., the oldest of the bunch I have been photographing since he was about 6 months old. He's gone through stages where at times I am his friend and he calls me "Aunt Kate" to times where he has been so shy and scared of me and my big camera that he won't have anything to do with me. On this day, we were pals and he showed me how good he is at playing pool. Sorry to say I think the three year old could probably beat me at a game!

After hanging out and having some fun with L., I met 9 day old baby, S. He was having sweet dreams!

I had lots of fun photographing little S. in some cool spots in their home. Here he is on an antique bench that has lots of meaning for this family. I love it!

I then wrapped S. in this hand knit cocoon and placed him in a basket to perch on top of the buffet in the dining room. Who knew it would be so comfortable he'd sleep like a rock!

After many photos of S., it was time to get all the boys together. It was just about nap time for N. and he was more than reluctant at first, but after a bit of convincing and a red ring pop he was ready! I love this one of the two older boys.

I don't want to spoil the surprise of my favorite of all the boys together quite yet, so here are some more of S's older brothers. Happy N. with his pop.

My buddy, L.

Thanks, Berta for having me over! I had so much fun photographing (and playing with) your boys!
