Cape Cod Photography - Kate Murphy Lowenstein Photography

Welcome to my blog! I am a family portrait and wedding photographer based on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. My style is casual and classy; modern and classic; creative and fun! My passion is capturing natural and genuine expressions of the people I photograph using natural light and creating "real life images".

My enthusiasm for photography began nine years ago when I borrowed my friend's SLR (film) camera for my honeymoon. It was then I discovered I had a talent for photography. I took classes and seminars, read books and immersed myself in photography and dreamed that someday I would be a photographer.

Forward nine years and I am a wife, mother of three, and a photographer. I wear flip flops or Uggs and jeans almost every day. I love to dress up on special occasions. I love the beach. I love meeting new people and spending time getting to know them. I love to capture who a person is, their genuine smiles, their interaction with the people they love. I think a person's eyes tell a lot about who they are, and I love getting so close to their eyes that I cut off their head in the photograph.

Rather than rambling on about myself, below is a glimpse into both my personal and professional life featuring images from my photo shoots as well as my family and friends. All in all, I hope my blog gives you a sense of who I am and what I'm all about...

Check back frequently for what's happening and studio specials.

Thanks for visiting!

My first Vineyard wedding!

In mid-October I finally had the pleasure of meeting Michael and Lucy. They had booked my photography services over a year before, and we'd spoken many times on the phone, but I didn't get to meet them until a few weeks prior to their wedding.

Frankly, they made me a little nervous as they told me they hated having their picture taken and seems they had a not-so-great experience with their engagement session (which I did not photograph!). But they were so cute and so nice and I could tell that they were totally comfortable with each other which is really the biggest requirement for me to produce great photographs.

So a few weeks passed and my assistant, Sherri and I boarded the ferry the morning of Lucy and Michael's wedding all geared up. Sherri's cousin is an island resident and graciously picked us up at the dock, gave us a quick tour of our destinations that day and dropped us off at the bride's father's house. Lucy was still putting the finishing touches on her veil (OK she was actually sewing it!), so we took Michael outside to warm him up for the thousands of images we'd capture that day.

Meet Michael.

And here's Lucy. She has incredible eyes! And nice job on the veil!

Everything was in walking distance from the bride's father's house in Edgartown, so here is the bride and her MOH walking to the church. What a beautiful fall day!

Michael and Lucy were married at St. Elizabeth's.

Lucy couldn't stop giggling throughout the ceremony. I love the look that Michael is giving her in this shot!

My favorite photograph of the day is usually when the bride and groom walk down the aisle after their ceremony relieved that it is over and elated that they are now married. I especially love this shot, because instead of looking at the camera, they are looking at each other. Yahoo! We're married!

Immediately after the ceremony, we took a short stroll down the road to this beautiful park while the church bells rang, and rang, and rang...

I love this one!

And this series too!

It wasn't until we were nearly finished with our bride and groom pics that the church bells stopped ringing! Now, I think at this point I have proved that they both photograph beautifully!

And then it was a short stroll through town to the Edgartown Yacht Club. As it was the weekend before Halloween, there were some trick-or-treaters about and cool decorations.

After family formal shots on the docks in the wind and three outstanding speeches by the Best Man, Maid of Honor and the groom himself, Lucy and Michael showed off their dance moves. They do a tango better than Brook Burke!

It was a great day and so fun to be on the Vineyard for a wedding! Thanks Michael and Lucy for a fabulous time and for inviting Sherri and I to share in the joy of your wedding day!

A long post today since A) I haven't blogged in ages, and B) because this bride and groom have soooo patiently waited to see their wedding photos! Thanks Michael and Lucy!

Back to the blog!

It's been so long since I've blogged any images and not only have I had clients and friends say they've missed my posts, I've missed them too! So, here's a little collage of Lainey. It was an impromptu session when she came out to visit me in the studio Friday evening. She came out and said she wanted to take a picture and grabbed her pettiskirt and hat (new favorites that I used to have to force her into), changed herself and sat down in front of my backdrop. She changes her clothes about 3 times a day, is very opinionated about what she wears (everything must be pink!), is potty-training herself (she stayed dry all morning yesterday wearing her "wonderwear"), and loves to draw and color. And she's cute as a button too!

Saturday Quinn lost his 1st tooth! Immediately I dragged him into the studio to document the momentous event.
Why is it every time I photograph this kid he is in dire need of a haircut! can you believe the tooth fairy left him $5! I'm pretty certain I only got 25 cents for my first tooth!

And I couldn't leave out Jack even though he was too busy taking pictures next to me (and whining). So here are a few from July.

Even though the Christmas deadline has passed I am still feverishly working to get through the stack of orders on my desk, editing late October weddings, creating cards, and getting a couple more albums completed before the end of the year. If you have sent an order for cards it will take me a couple of weeks to get your proof to you for your approval and of course the Thanksgiving holiday will slow me down a bit.

I hope to be back to blogging my client sessions soon!
